May Discussion: The Light Between Oceans

This was supposed to be up early (ish) Saturday morning and we were out at my parents' house so I didn't have a chance to sit down and write. I know, I know. Excuses. BUT! I did finish the book for this month and I'm excited to write about it. So here we go...

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

1. Do you think the pregnancy and childbirth losses they went through affect the right or wrong of keeping the baby? How does this affect your thoughts on Tom & Isabel's decisions?

Being pregnant myself, I could understand Isabel's joy when she found out she was pregnant and I could sympathize with her each time she lost a baby. I think those losses definitely had an impact on the Sherbournes and their decision to keep Lucy. And as much as I sympathize with Isabel, I still find myself siding with Tom and his strong desire to report the boat right away. I think that may be because I've always been a rule follower. Because of their decision to keep Lucy, I had a pit in my stomach for most of the book in anticipation/dread of what could happen each time they arrived back in Partaguese.

2. Janus Rock is named for Janus, the Roman God of doorways, “always looking both ways, torn between two ways of seeing things.” (page 65) How does this information impact your reading of The Light Between Oceans? What could it mean for the characters in our novel?

When I realized the meaning behind Janus, all I could picture in my mind was Tom. He's heartbroken for the pain he feels that he's caused his wife, but also the pain that he may be (and later finds out he is)  causing another woman. I also can see this juxtaposition in Tom when he's looking back on what all has happened in his life and everything that could be coming. The foreshadowing of the pain that Tom's causing both women in the novel, definitely ties into Janus and how he had two choices and he was ultimately going to cause someone pain. The question is who would it be? His wife, the woman he loves or the true mother of Lucy-Grace?

3. When Isabel tries to get Tom to open up about his family, he responds: “I’ll tell you if you really want. It’s just I’d rather not. Sometimes it’s good to leave the past in the past.”(pages 44-45) Do you think it is possible to leave the past in the past? What does this tell you about Tom's character?

I think we as humans can try to leave the past in the past, but there's really no way to actually forget about it. That being said, it also seems that men, as a whole, are able to forget things easier. My husband won't remember the fight we had last week, but I will remember why we were fighting. When we talk about it, he says he doesn't remember because it's not important. Valid point.

But as far as Tom goes, this shows us a lot about who he is and the pain he experienced in his earlier years, especially during the war. We can start to understand the pain that Isabel's family feels when their two sons didn't make it home after the war. But to understand Tom's pain from the war, one would have to experience the horrors of war themselves. This makes Tom the man, husband, and father that we meet and know in the book.

4. What did you think of the main characters’ reactions when they discover the truth about Lucy?

I was surprised that Tom didn't side with Isabel more readily. Isabel says that they are the only family Lucy has ever known. While Tom may agree to that, he also feels a stronger urge to return Lucy to her rightful mother...even if that means breaking his wife's heart.

5. Were you surprised by Isabel’s final decision to admit her role in the choice to keep Lucy—freeing Tom, but losing her child forever? Why or why not? What would you have done?

I was and wasn't surprised to learn of Isabel's decision to admit her role. I had always hoped that she would. However, I can understand the longing she had for a child and then to see her husband ruin her chances in ever keeping "her" child would've been one of the toughest decisions to make. While I can understand her longing and can sympathize with her pain of losing Lucy, I also started to see Isabel as our antagonist in this section of the book. Tom just wanted everything to be okay with his soul and with his family. It's because of him that Lucy was able to have known the love of multiple parents and grandparents.

I'm not entirely sure what I would've done. While I know the outcome of this book, I want to say that I would allow my husband to send the report/alert when the baby first turned up...but the pain of having lost another child would've probably hindered my decision making ability. Even if I had not been able to give up that child when she first arrived, I'd like to think that when I found out that her mother was still alive, I would've done the right thing and given her back. But like with most things...until you're in that situation, it's hard to know what would be done.

6. What did you think of the conclusion of the novel? What emotions did you feel at the story’s end? Did it turn out as you expected? Were you satisfied?

I thought the end of the novel was very fitting. I was satisfied in seeing that even though Isabel, at one point, thought that her life would not be fulfilled without a child, she really was able to find peace with herself and Tom. Their lives were simple and beautiful at their farm once Isabel was released from the hospital. I definitely wasn't expecting this for an ending, but I feel it was wrapped up in a way that was definitely believable.

Thanks for joining us for this month's book club discussion! If you have any comments/input on your thoughts about the book, please comment below! I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Five on Friday: Book Edition

Joining up with A. Liz Adventures for this week's Five on Friday post. Head on over to check it out.

Today I had books on my mind. Not just fun books, but professional books that I've read or want to read.

one | Write Beside Them by Penny Kittle

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3290869-write-beside-them?from_search=true&search_version=service

We read this for a book study for school this year and I'm so glad I did. I got some great ideas to try in my classroom and different projects/units to try with my students for this fall.

two | The First Days of School by Harry & Rosemary Wong

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/74814.The_First_Days_Of_School?from_search=true&search_version=service

This book is great if you're a student studying to become a teacher, a brand new teacher, or even someone who's been teaching for a while. I plan to re-read this soon to prep myself for next year.

three | The Reading/Writing Connection by Carol Booth Olson

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/684451.The_Reading_Writing_Connection?from_search=true&search_version=service

I read this book for the first time in college during one of my Methods classes. Now I'm wishing I had been more thorough in my note taking from that class...so I guess I'll be reading it again this summer so my ideas are honed for the fall. I'm hoping to develop an engaging Multigenre Project...so if ou have any ideas...

four | When Kids Can't Read What Teachers Can Do by Kylene Beers

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/39929.When_Kids_Can_t_Read_What_Teachers_Can_Do?from_search=true&search_version=service

I started reading this right after college...picked it up and put it down again during my first year of teaching. Eventually, I read the whole thing. But much like the Carol Booth Olson book, I wish I would've been more thorough in my reading/note-taking. So this goes on my re-read stack too.

five | Book Love by Penny Kittle

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15858200-book-love?from_search=true&search_version=service

The cover of this book isn't the most appealing, but I'm really looking forward to reading this book this summer. I received it as a gift from a friend and I really enjoyed Kittle's other book that I've read. Write Beside Them is her book all about writing and Book Love is...you guessed it...all about reading. More reading strategies for the fall? Here I come!

If you're not into professional reading for English teachers, I apologize that I bored you. But if you're interested, check these titles out. And friend me on Goodreads if you want.

Happy Friday!

Week 31

Well, we're here! Down to single digits! We're in the middle of week 31, so there's 8 1/2 weeks to go. Oh baby.

How far along: 31 weeks and counting...

Size of baby: the size of a coconut (I feel like we've already had this one), a head of cabbage, or a foam finger.

Gender: Unknown--take the poll on the right. Also, take the survey about baby here.

Nursery: Kyle painted a second coat of grey this weekend and we're hoping to get more done with the trim this week/end!

Movement:
Constant. At our appointment on Monday, the Dr. was listening to baby's heartbeat and with the best timing s/he kicked the doppler. Dr. said apparently the kid's got good aim! hah. Moving. All. The. Time.

Symptoms:
My hips are hurting more every day and it's getting hard to roll over in bed. And boo. Monday night I had my first obvious evidence of edema. Not. Fun.

Sleep: Sleep is okay for the time being. I'm starting to wake up earlier on my own. Since Sunday, I've been waking up around 5:30. Fortunately I've been able to fall back asleep.

Cravings:
Fruit. It all sounds good all of the time. And apparently peanut butter. On Monday I was really warm...so after our meeting, Kyle and I dished up some ice cream and started putting our toppings on. I chose bananas and peanut butter...and I left a little bit in the bottom of the jar. Kyle started laughing and said, "Not pregnant Kelly would never put this jar back in the cupboard! Apparently pregnant Kelly needs the rest of it!" He was amused.

Missing:
The cool weather. It's not been terribly hot all of the time, but it's warm enough that I'm not enjoying the afternoons...but anything over 75 is a little too much for me, pregnant or not.

Best moment of the week:
Having a good chat with my friend, Molly, about all things baby and how her experience was. Also, we went out to coffee...I love coffee dates. And friends.

Looking forward to:
Summer. Graduation is next Thursday and our last day is next Friday!

Happy Wednesday!

The Light Between Oceans: May Questions

Okay...the time has come. Here are a few questions about The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman. Come back here on Saturday for my thoughts on the book! *Also, if you're not quite finished...don't read all of the questions, unless you're okay with some spoilers!*

Five on Friday

Here we are with another round of Five on Friday with A. Liz Adventures! Like most of my other posts, there will be lots of things baby...but you can find that out for yourself.

one | Contest!

I told you I'd have a contest for you. Please limit your responses to one per person. And go!

two | Baby Shower

I'm getting so excited for the baby shower Aubrey is hosting for me. It's a fiesta theme...so I'm hoping for some virgin margaritas (!) and nachos. We'll see what she's got planned.

three | Food

In case you missed my post on Monday, I put up some of our favorite recipes right now. And if you really missed it...I posted a pic of the salmon I made on Tuesday night.

It's with the honey, soy sauce glaze I wrote about in Monday's post. So. Good. And it was on the grill!

four | School

Only nine more school days and we can all taste it. Summer is well on its way to us and it's within our grasp. Unfortunately, we still have nine more school days to go. The last three won't be so bad, but next week will go one of two ways: 1. it draaaaagggggssss on and feels like it's going to last forrrreeeevvveeeerrr or 2. it's going to fly by and we won't know what hit us.

I've received five graduation invitations so far...four from my students at my previous school and one from my current school. I feel bad that I won't be able to attend any parties tonight from my previous school, so I decided to do a girls' brunch at my house.

Good idea or no?

five | Marathon Weekend

It's going to be nuts around here this weekend. Grand Forks is hosting Florida Georgia Line and Fargo is hosting their annual Marathon. I've got a friend from Northwestern who is going to come stay with us tonight before the Marathon tomorrow. I'm so excited to see her! It's been years (probably since my wedding) since we've been together!!

And if you're ever interested in running a marathon, I've heard the Fargo Marathon is the shiz.

Happy Friday!

Week 30

How is it possible that we've only got 10 (ish) weeks to go?? Yikes!

How far along: 30 weeks (WHAT?!)

Size of baby: the size of a cabbage, a zucchini, or a cantaloupe

Gender: Unknown--take the poll on the right.

Nursery: Still not much progress being made. Kyle purchased the trim for the door this last weekend...so now we've got to get another coat of paint on the walls.

Movement:
Constant.

Symptoms:
Suuuper tired. I've taken a nap almost every evening/afternoon over the course of the last week.

Sleep:
I'm still sleeping okay and I've been sleeping like a rock. I usually get up around 1:30 for a bathroom run, but otherwise...that's it.

Cravings:
I guess my love of fruit is consistent and strong enough that I can call it a craving. Blueberries. Strawberries. Melon. Pineapple. Bananas. (Not apples though)

Missing:
Two things: being able to button my pants and being able to shave my legs without almost tipping over.

Best moment of the week:
Passing my 3 hour glucose test on Monday! Last week I took my 1 hour glucose test and failed by 6 points (SIX POINTS!!). My blood sugar needed to be at or below 135...and mine was 141. UGH. Tears were shed last week. So my Monday morning was spent sitting in the hospital lab. But I got the call in the afternoon that I "passed all four draws with flying colors". So that's been a relief!

Looking forward to:
The baby shower that Aubrey is throwing for me in a MONTH!! Again, how is time flying?!

And you can bet a good dollar that I'll be back next week to share what else is going on over here.

Happy Wednesday!

What we're cooking

It's warming up again around these parts and I'm SO thankful for our grill. I don't know what it is about the spring, maybe it's the sunshine or the fact that we've been cooped up in the house all winter, but we love cooking outside whenever we have the chance.

Our grill is a Stok and we absolutely love it! It comes with inserts that can be changed out. Usually the only switching we do is for the pizza stone that came with it.

That being said, we've been cooking on the grill and when it was cooler we were still cooking inside. But here are a few recipes we've been loving and/or looking forward to using again now that it's nicer.

1 | Burgers (pretty standard)

I know burgers on the grill are pretty standard, but we love to spice them up a little. Yesterday we grilled burgers and tonight we are as well.

1 lb ground beef 80%-93% (if we use the leaner beef, we usually add an egg or some sausage to it)
1 tsp sage
1/2 tsp black pepper (freshly ground is our preference)
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 T dried chopped onion
Red pepper flakes (opt)
*I also love sprinkling some cajun seasoning on my burger, especially with pepperjack cheese and fresh jalepenos*

Mix the sage, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, chopped onion, and pepper flakes into the beef. Form into 1/3 lb patties and grill approx 3-4 min per side. *longer if you want them more well done*

Top with cheese of choice.

2 | Chicken Curry

2-3 chicken breasts (diced & fried)
3-4 c water
1/4 c curry powder
1 can coconut milk
1/8 c coconut (opt)
thicken with cornstarch
fruit & veggies of choice

Fry the chicken and then add water and curry powder. Once curry powder is dissolved, add coconut milk & coconut and thicken with cornstarch. Simmer until thickened.

Serve over rice and top with fruit & veggies of your choice.

Kyle and I recently watched the show Cooked on Netflix. It's a fascinating four-part series that looks at all of the elements of cooking fire, water, air, & earth. The water segment followed pot cooking in India and one of the meals the women were making was curry. Thus, our strong desire to cook curry this weekend.

The recipe that I have is a recipe given to my mom from one of her friends who has been a missionary to Africa. So it's more of an African curry than an Indian curry.

When we make curry, we tend to only top it with fruits instead of veggies. Our favorites are: mandarin oranges, pineapple, bananas, peanuts, & coconut. Last night we ended up adding blueberries to that mixture and they were tasty!

3 | BBQ Chicken (again...standard)

1 chicken breast per person
Famous Dave's Rich and Sassy Sauce
1-2 c rice
asparagus

When we grill chicken, we tend to keep it pretty simple. One thawed chicken breast per person gets thrown on the grill for 4-5 min per side. After we flip it the first time, we add some FD's sauce to the already grilled side and continue cooking until done (internal temp of 165).

We usually serve it with a side of rice and asparagus. We coat the asparagus in olive oil and sprinkle with lemon juice (freshly squeezed is best) and some kosher salt. Bake in oven at 400 degrees, rotating every 5 min or so, until tender.

It's a super simple meal that we usually have everything on hand for.

4 | Salmon

I'm going to start this part off by saying I'm not a fish/seafood fan...BUT! I do love me a good piece of salmon. And when we first got our grill, we were stoked to find this recipe:

1 T packed brown sugar
1 T melted butter
1 T olive oil
1 T honey
1 T soy sauce
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 large salmon fillet, skin on (divided into approx 8 parts)

Mix all ingredients except salmon. Place salmon in a container, cover with marinade, and let rest for 30-60 min.

Place salmon on grill, skin side down. Brush salmon with more marinade 2-3 times. Grill on Med heat 10-20 min.

When I grill mine, I usually put 2-3 salmon pieces in tin foil and cover with the marinade. Seriously. So. Good.

And while I could go on and on and on about all of the good food we've been eating or are planning to eat, I'll just go collect the drool and figure out what we're having to eat the rest of the week.

Happy Monday!

Week 29

It's hard to believe we're only a week and a half out from single digit weeks until the day. It's coming super fast and that means school is almost done too!

How far along: 29 weeks

Size of baby: Roughly the size of a butternut squash, a cauliflower (how the??), a pineapple, or a Barbie convertible.

Gender: The poll is still going. I'm still convinced boy and Kyle is convinced girl...one of us will be right.

Nursery: Kyle has an idea for the baseboards, so we will see how it turns out!

Movement: Constant movement. I was not feeling well on Tuesday...fever and everything...baby apparently didn't like that because s/he was not moving quite as much.

Symptoms: Still pretty tired. Between the tail end of the cold and the fever, all I want to do is sleep.

Sleep: This week has been rough for sleep. I'm up every hour or two...on good nights I don't get up more than once.

Cravings: Not much for cravings...still loving fruit.

Missing: Being able to move at my normal speed. :)

Best moment of the week: On Tuesday when I wasn't feeling great, I got all hooked up to a fetal monitor and it was neat to hear that sweet heartbeat and the swooshing of baby's movements.

Looking forward to: Having fewer things to worry about in regards to school. The end is in sight.

Happy Friday!
And I'll catch ya on Monday.

May's Book: The Light Between Oceans

I had planned to post about Week 29, but seeing as how my most recent post was about Week 28, I figured that something else should happen around here. And I'm sorry for those of you who don't want to hear about baby or books. Feel free to just skip on out. :)

But if you do choose to stick around here..

May's book is The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. Follow the link to read a summary of the book. I'm still working my way through the book, but I will have questions posted for our discussion on May 23. (That's our last Monday of school! Woo!) And our discussion will take place here on the morning of Saturday, May 28.

I look forward to chatting with you on May 28!

Week 28

We've officially arrived in the third (say what?!) trimester and I know I've said it before...but it's hard to believe it's gone so fast! So now that I'm hitting the tail end of week 28, here's another little update.

How far along: 28 weeks

Size of baby: Baby is the size of an eggplant or a coconut

Gender: The poll is still going. Make sure that your vote counts! Speaking of voting...I'll have a contest around these parts soon...probably Monday.

Nursery: Kyle has the first coat of paint on the doors and we are getting to the point where he's working on the baseboards...

Movement: Constant movement.  Frequently I'll get a butt to the ribs...that's interesting.

Symptoms: Still pretty tired. I did manage to catch a cold last week...so that's been adding to the exhaustion.

Sleep: I'm still sore if I sleep on one side all night...but depending on the night, I don't usually have to get up...yet.

Cravings: Not much for cravings...unless you count the fact that all fruit and all carbs are my jam.

Missing:Wearing pants for work. I have two pair of pants that I can still wear to work...the rest are just a touch too tight. So it looks like skirts, dresses, and leggings/tunics will be it for the next 4-ish weeks.

Best moment of the week: Getting my shower invites out! It would be a touch expensive if Aubrey had to mail them from BKK.

Looking forward to: Feeling like spring is finally here and that means school is almost done...and with the end of school comes summer, which means baby.

Catch ya tomorrow with another Five on Friday!

Happy Thursday!

So much crazy... {By the Numbers}

Most of you know by now that we are having a baby in July. And those of you who missed that memo...now you know. It's hard for me to believe that it's coming so fast! So, here's a little run-down of what our lives look like in the next 12 1/2 weeks.

Twelve and a half weeks to go!

one hundred and fifty cupcakes to bake and frost
twenty-one days of school
twenty frozen meals to prep
eight weekends at home
seven doctor's appointments
five birthing classes to attend
five thousand loads of laundry
five birthdays
four graduation parties
three weekends of hosting guests
three babies to be born (not including ours)
two baby showers
two anniversaries
one graduation ceremony
one marathon to attend
one 5K to participate in
one set of stairs to refinish
one bathroom to tile
one baby's room to finish
and
ONE family vacation to attend

I'm not entirely sure how everything will get done...but where there's a will there's a way, right?? I'm not so sure. But if you have a free day or two and want to help with some projects...you know how to get in contact with me! And if you don't, but want to see our progress--follow along on IG with our hashtags: #babyentzel and #k2entzel
