So much crazy... {By the Numbers}

Most of you know by now that we are having a baby in July. And those of you who missed that memo...now you know. It's hard for me to believe that it's coming so fast! So, here's a little run-down of what our lives look like in the next 12 1/2 weeks.

Twelve and a half weeks to go!

one hundred and fifty cupcakes to bake and frost
twenty-one days of school
twenty frozen meals to prep
eight weekends at home
seven doctor's appointments
five birthing classes to attend
five thousand loads of laundry
five birthdays
four graduation parties
three weekends of hosting guests
three babies to be born (not including ours)
two baby showers
two anniversaries
one graduation ceremony
one marathon to attend
one 5K to participate in
one set of stairs to refinish
one bathroom to tile
one baby's room to finish
and
ONE family vacation to attend

I'm not entirely sure how everything will get done...but where there's a will there's a way, right?? I'm not so sure. But if you have a free day or two and want to help with some projects...you know how to get in contact with me! And if you don't, but want to see our progress--follow along on IG with our hashtags: #babyentzel and #k2entzel

And as always,

Happy Wednesday!

Five on Friday

I feel like all I've been writing about here, is my pregnancy...and there I go again.

So since it's Friday, I figured I'd join up with A. Liz Adventures for another round of Five on Friday, with the hopes that I'll find some sort of groove and I won't be filling up your feed with only pregnancy journals. *yeah right*

one | hockey, hockey, hockey

UND played in their fourth consecutive Frozen Four last night. We don't have cable, so we weren't able to watch the game. Boo. But! The game was a WIN! It was a fun (and nervewracking) game to watch, but the boys prevailed. UND beat University of Denver 4-2.

http://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/und-hockey/4004878-frozen-four-unds-poolman-puts-wall-stop-denvers-power-play

two | school

We are approximately whoamikidding exactly 37 days away from our last day of school and graduation. That means that I need to get crackin on my cousin's graduation cupcakes. Her party is June 4. I'm going to be enormous, so I'm hoping/praying that I can get some most of them baked and frozen by the second week in May. Any tips for freezing cake?

three | garden

Our plants are growing! It's so fun to get home from work every day and see how much they've grown! *insert whiny momma voice here* I'm awfully proud of them so far.

four | tree help

Last year we found out that we have apricot trees in our yard! Cool! BUT. All of the fruit fell off the trees before they could ripen. Is there a master gardener out there who can help me?? Anyone? *crickets*

five | conferencing

Kyle and I were presenting at a conference last weekend for the student chapter of our state's teacher's union. It was a great time. Really, it was. And I've got another conference tomorrow. Our teachers are putting on a Writing and Reading conference for the middle/high school students in our community. Chris Crutcher is even coming to speak! Wish me luck...I don't do well with mornings before 8am on weekends.

What are five things you're thinking about today? And as always, make sure to link up with A. Liz Adventures if you're participating! And I'm off to my 24 week appointment this afternoon (sorry...just had to)!

Happy Friday!

Five on Friday

It's time for another Five on Friday with A. Liz Adventures! It's been a while since I've participated, so let's see how it goes.

one | school

Block 4 is just about half done and it's crazy to think this is our longest block! At my school we run a 6 block year. Students have 2 classes per block for 3 hours per day and each block is approximately 30 days long. This way they are able to earn their 6 credits per year, but only have 2 classes at a time. When I first started, it was hard to adjust to the new schedule and the routine of having to do grades 6 times per year. But as I've grown accustomed to the routine, I've realized just how much faster the year seems to fly by!

two | conferences

Kyle and I are headed to a conference for the state's teachers' union. Exciting stuff. I know. Even though it's a conference for work, we will get to see Kyle's parents and we don't even have to fork over money for a hotel! Woohoo!

three | books

I just started the book for this month's discussion, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15507958-me-before-you?from_search=true&search_version=service

I'm not sure what I think of it yet, but I'll keep you posted as I keep progressing. I think Aubrey has already finished the book. So there's that to keep in mind.

four | crocheting

My friend, Beth, is pregnant and could give birth any day now and she asked me to crochet her little boy a new beanie hat. So I've been looking for some good patterns. What do you think of this one?

I'm hoping to knock it out of the park this weekend in the car on the way to and from the conference...and getting more of my book read.

five | camp patton

She's back! And I couldn't be more excited! When I saw that Grace was back to blogging, I almost fell out of my chair. I also had to share it on Facebook because I love her blog that much. She's hilarious, real, and she's got 5 of the most adorable kids ever. Head on over to Camp Patton to check her out. And if you like The Bachelor, you'll enjoy her recaps.

Now head on over to A. Liz Adventures to check out the other Five-on-Friday blog posts!

Happy Friday!

Five on Friday

I've set the goal that I'm going to blog three times per week. Unfortunately, that's not exactly happened. The holidays were crazy. Getting back into the swing of school was crazy. The end of the semester is today...so that's crazy. My life is just crazy right now and that's okay. Life goes in cycles and this is one of those crazy cycles.

So here's another Five-on-Friday to start off your weekend with.

one | hockey

Our Christmas gift to some friends were some UND Men's Hockey tickets. I always enjoy a good UND hockey game and it's even more enjoyable to go with friends. So we are putting our UND gear on and we're heading to the game. Hopefully the boys will drop us off and go park the cars since it's supposed to be 8 degrees below zero...with a Real Feel of 26 degrees below! Ah!

two | winter

is officially here. It snowed all day yesterday and the temps are back to our typical January temps...down below zero. Yay.

three | alan rickman

So Alan Rickman died yesterday and it's sad. I'll need to go back and rewatch Harry Potter now.

four | essential oils

I reeeaaaallllllllyyyyyy don't want to get sick and I don't want Kyle sick either. It seems like all of my students are sniffling, sneezing, or coughing. Or some combination. So we've been using Young Living Thieves oil every night before bed. We use a few drops of grapeseed oil, a few drops of Thieves, and we rub it on the bottoms of our feet. Kyle hasn't started sniffling yet. Here's to hoping.
And if you want to order any...let me know. I'll hook you up.

five | end of the semester

It's so hard to believe that it's already the end of the semester! School has been in session for half of the year already. For some reason...I feel that second semester tends to move faster. There are more events, more activities, more things to get done and it keeps my mind off the fact that we're running out of time to fit everything in for the year.  How do you other teachers do it? I get a whole new batch of kids on Monday and we're off to the races! Wowza.

Have a lovely weekend and I hope to catch you all on Tuesday!

Inked.

I'm not a rebellious person. Growing up, I never wanted to make my parents mad. Sometimes I did let them down and then I cried. Mom and I yelled many times, but when Dad told me he was "disappointed in me", I broke down.

For some reason, I really, really, REALLY, hate letting people down. When I wanted to get my belly-button pierced, my parents said, "No more piercings or any tattoos until you're on your own and you pay for them."

So...what did I do in my first two months at college? I got a new piercing.

After I transferred to UND, I decided it was time to get a tattoo. So I went to 46 & 2 in Fargo for my first tattoo.

I loved it!

I didn't let many moons pass before I decided to get another one. I made sure to return to 46 & 2 for my second.

The time has come where my itch for a new tattoo is too strong. My pal, carrie, and I are headed back to 46 & 2 for some fresh ink. I wrote about my upcoming tattoo, last week.

So if you've got me on Snapchat or if you follow me here, here, or here, be on the lookout for fresh ink this Saturday!

What do you think about tattoos? Do you have any?
I'd love to hear your opinions!

9 | Dear Sixteen Year Old Me

This letter to my sixteen year old self is coming at an appropriate time since my birthday is mere weeks away. Enjoy.

Hello little girl,

You just turned sixteen and you're pumped. Trust me, I remember. Whatever you do, don't forget to enjoy the time you have with your friends, love fiercely, and don't care what anyone else thinks or says about you. Life is short and you have so much left to live. Also, your future husband isn't who you're dreaming about right now. Get over him.

This year you will play lots of volleyball, get a job, get your drivers' license, and lose a close friend. You will laugh and enjoy your time on and off the court with your friends. You and your best friends will fight over stupid things. You will finally have your license and drive into the ditch on your way to church. It was slippery! Have fun with all of this. Laugh. Love. Make sure to cherish the time you have. Go snowboarding. Don't wait until "next year." You won't have the same people around next year.

Show the people around you that you care about them. Don't assume your siblings know that you love them. They really might not. There will be a day when you wish you'd have listened to me. Honest. Don't waste the time you have now to build your friendships (yes, you can be friends with your brother and sister). There will be a day in the not too distant future when you won't talk to any high school friends. It's coming. Prepare.

Finally, don't care what everyone else thinks of you. No, you won't know about the parties when you're in High School. You're going to be so busy with sports, work, and youth group that you'll hear about the parties after the fact. You won't even be invited to your Senior Class Party. You'll be sad and hurt for a while, but you'll survive. You'll even laugh about it one day. Choose the things and the people that you invest in carefully. You've got one life to live. Make sure you live it well.

You have no idea how much time and energy you're wasting on people who don't matter. Enjoy your time in YLI. Invest in those people. Don't worry about boys. You'll end up with the perfect man for you. He will be your first true boyfriend and he will woo you. He'll ask your dad if he can date you. He will make you food (don't worry, he'll let you make the food once you're married). He will pursue Jesus and long to grow old with you. Don't be anxious. But enjoy the time you have. Enjoy the people you're with. Your life won't look like you've always imagined, but it will be wonderful.

Enjoy your now, love fiercely, and be you.

xo,
Your 25 year old self

This is me (at 17? I couldn't find a 16 one...) and one of
my best Aussie friends, Alannah. Miss you! xx

Let it snow, Let it snow...Wait! It's May 18! {By the Numbers}

Yeah, you read that right. It's snowing.

On May 18.

But that's okay. Because with the forecast for the rest of the week, we're looking at mostly sunny with highs in the 70s!

Wahoo!

So I figured that today was as good as any, to do a By the Numbers. It's been a while since I've hosted one...so, why not?

As teachers, we look forward to summer. Not necessarily because we get a break (because I'm hoping to teach summer school this year & Kyle is hoping to help a beekeeper--another story for another day), but because we have a new routine. Sure--some of us do get a legit vacation, but most of us have additional jobs, we work on our curriculum, or we even take grad classes. And some of us have family obligations (por ejemplo--weddings coming out of our ears!!) that can't be attended to during the school year.

And if you've survived that crazy train, here's the rest of my school year By the Numbers.

626 miles

7 meetings

5 dinner dates

4 graduation gifts to buy

3 graduation ceremonies

2 birthday presents to make/send

2 graduation parties to attend

1 wedding

1 Federal Holiday

And only
17 days to do it all in

March Madness

Well--this post doesn't necessarily have to do with the NCAA March Madness going on right now...even though my bracket is now crap. *Sorry Kyle, I'm out $10
But it DOES have to do with how crazy this month has gone by. I mean, seriously. I was just sitting in my living room marveling at the fact that March was neigh upon us. And then, BAM!, here it's over. And that means a few things for our family.

[one]
No more double payments on living arrangements. We don't have to pay on our apartment and our mortgage anymore. One payment from here on out. AND, I do believe we are getting our deposit back too! Don't get me wrong, I loved our time in our first apartment together. And there were times that I loved our second apartment too. But being in our own home has made me very grateful for everything we've been blessed with.

[two]
Only 10--yes, you read that right--10 more weeks of school left FOR.THE.YEAR! Year #1 in a new school, in a new district, and it's FLOWN by! Only 4 more weeks (really 3 1/2) left in our "semester" and then our last 6 week block. I feel that I've grown as a teacher and as a person these last 9-ish months. I'll elaborate more on that at a later date.

[three]
We are in the throes of home improvement planning for the summer. Check out my insta for some photos that give a little tease of what we're thinking. And the hashtag #homeimproving on IG has our specific home projects. (click my IG button--do it. Then request to follow me. Do it.)

[four]
I'm so excited to try this out this spring. I love plants. I love gardening. And I love greenhouses.
How great is it that this had a rebate? It was only $10 afterward.

How perfect will this be in my our bare backyard??

[five]
Aubrey's time has come! She's hosting this month's book club discussion. And since she's the boss hostess, she's decided that her review won't be up until Monday. Capisce? Cap-osh.

Here are her discussion questions for this month's book--Wuthering Heights

Now go have a good weekend and don't forget to finish reading the book! See you soon!

Five on Friday--and The Glass Menagerie

[ONE]
Today is a day off from school. Unfortunately--much of it will still be spent grading...but I'm so thankful that I get a day at home with my husband. And it's not the weekend.

[TWO]
I've been loving these blogs/posts this week:

I'm linking up with her for today's Five on Five

[THREE]

[FOUR]
My husband brought me coffee this morning--without me asking him to. :)

[FIVE]
The Glass Menagerie questions go live today--and the discussion goes live tomorrow!

Questions:
-Which character did you connect most with?
-What were your expectations for the play? Did the play meet or exceed your expectations?
     (or something else)
-Overall, what were your opinions of the play? How do you feel about plays in general?
-How many stars would you give The Glass Menagerie (1-5)?

Alright! Get ready and if you've not finished the play--you've still got some time!

Happy Friday!

Five on Friday

I've never participated in a Five on Friday--so I figured today is as good as any!

1. Seriously. Pretty!

Kyle asked what I wanted for Valentine's Day. I said flowers. At work. So he dropped off these beauties for me today. He's a good one.

2. I cannot wait for supper tomorrow night...

A Valentine's Date with some of our good friends?! Why didn't we think of that sooner? We are ordering cheesy fried pickles and the world will be good.

3.  I'm currently working my way through this:

I'm still unsure how I feel about it. I'll let you know. But check over here and especially here for our book club details.

4. I'm not sure what my weekend will look like (other than tomorrow--see #2)...but I do know I'll have plenty of grading to do. Yikes. Pray for me?

5. We've been blessed with a warm day today! It's 12 above zero! (it does feel like -4, but who cares) At least it's not as cold as yesterday! So I'll bask in the warmer temps and wait until it dips below zero air temp again.

Until then...

Happy Friday!

I'm linking up over here so go check it out.

A Contest

I was thinking on my way to work this morning...a dangerous activity since I hadn't yet had my coffee.

But as I was thinking, I was trying to decide what I wanted to write about today. There are so many things. You may have read my post about our most recent house hunting developments. And you may have decided that I was suuuupppeeerrrrr boring interesting, so you'd come back! Well...welcome. And here's what I schemed up for today.

A few weeks ago I had my students write 5-7 pet peeves on a post-it note. I then wrote them on the board in a random order. They then had to guess which pet peeve belonged to each of their classmates. So I thought I'd give you that same opportunity today...or similar.

I've thought up five...not seven...of my real pet peeves and two (totaling seven) fake pet peeves. Can you figure out which ones are the fakes?

A prize to the first reader who guesses correctly!

1. I get annoyed with people who DO.NOT.CARE. about moving forward in life. Are you reading to learn something new? Are you thinking about life differently? Are you appreciating what you've been blessed with? Are you trying to make the world a better place? Are you trying to make yourself better in some way?

2. I dislike when people chew with their mouths open. Gross. Flying food? Bleck.

3. I hate clashing colors. Really? Those pants with that top?

4. People who DON'T use their blinkers. Enough said.

5. Crunchy leaves.

6. Smelly people who don't shower and you can tell.

7. When I realize how attached to my phone I am.

So...now it's your turn! Let's see how well you do!

Making Friends: Grown-Up Edition

When I think about making friends, I always picture my baby sister at the campground at Bemidji State Park.

"Hi, my name is Emma. Will you be my friend? We can play."

Those sentences will be forever ingrained in my memory.

As a small child, it's easy to make friends. You consider everyone who appears to be younger than Dad and Mom, friend potential. Simply saying, "Hello." to someone could keep them in your life for years to come.

As an elementary aged child, making friends (initially) comes with very little risk. If you're (un)fortunate enough to go to a small school, your friends or non friends could be in your very class (the horror)! If you're (un)fortunate to go to a large school, you might only see your friends or non friends on the playground or the bus. Again, these friends could stay with you for life.

*Disclaimer: I do still talk to classmates from elementary school...but we aren't close anymore.*

Middle School and High School are harder. In my case, everyone in my class in High School had been in my class since Pre-k. If I wanted to make new friends, I had to look to older or younger classes (say what?!).

College is where it starts to get easier again...at least for your Freshman year. You're all in orientation groups together. You have dinner together every night with your "brother/sister" hall. Maybe you're fortunate to have familiar faces in a GenEd class that you know from Freshman Orientation. Hopefully 3 or 4 of tense friends from that first college year will stick with you to the end.

*I DID love my Orientation group! Honest!*

Then, say you transfer to a different college. You end up in a random apartment placement. You have NO idea who anyone is. Your roommate seems nice enough, but your suite mates? No thanks.

This happened to me. It was hard making friends that semester. Most of the Sophomores had made their college friends last year. So...the next best place to meet people...class. Yep. I'm a nerd and some of my best friends I have are because we took classes together.

Maybe you made friends at a Christmas party and someone duct taped your leg to someone else's leg. *Hey...it happens! I'll find the photo to prove it!* And she could be your best friend for years to come!

Now, all of these things are entirely possible. They're also some of the easier ways to make friends. Early childhood, Elementary, High School, and college are all perfectly acceptable places to make friends.

My big dilemma is HOW IN THE WORLD DO I MAKE FRIENDS NOW THAT I'M A REAL ADULT WITH A BIG KID JOB?!

That's what I'll be exploring throughout the next few weeks.

Stay tuned and Happy Monday!

**Oh...and if you have some sure-fire way to make friends as a grown-up, pleeeassseee comment and let me know. Or Facebook/Tweet/IG me if that suits you better. I'll be putting feedback on here one day coming up too!**

a look at my first week in a new school

But...first a little background.
When I graduated high school, my heart was set on going to school at Northwestern in St. Paul (now University of Northwestern--St. Paul). So, my first year was at a private college. The following summer I transferred to a sweet, cheaper state school closer to home. Did I say cheaper? Like, much cheaper. I thrived in that environment. I loved all of the people. I adored my church and campus church group. But once I got into my program, I realized that I loved being in the classroom.

The kiddos were hilarious. The teachers were phenomenal to work with and learn from. I did my last practicum at a smaller High School nearby. The teacher was great--the students were willing to learn. The next semester I worked in a Middle School with seventh graders. Again...some of the funniest creatures on the planet. Not only that, but they still like their teachers!

After student teaching in 9th and 11th grade, I got my first teaching job! Who did I teach? I taught High School English. Grades 7-12.

Yes. I did teach all of them. Every day I saw all of the high schoolers and I never was able to teach the same lesson more than once per year. Yipes! There were so many things to deal with on top of having 6 preps per day!

*Don't get me wrong...I adored my students. I miss many of them.

But...this summer I received a job in a district I've been wanting to be a part of. I'm now teaching English to 9th-12th grades at an Alternative Education school.

Thus, yesterday marked the end of week 1.

I went from having 120-ish students to having 15. Yes, I am at a new school. My coworkers are awesome! They've been so helpful and extremely understanding with me.

Here's to a new year! *Now if you're still awake after reading this post...I recommend grabbing a cup of coffee to ensure you stay awake. I'll have a more exciting post soon. Promise.

It's Only Thursday and Already...

It's only Thursday. There's one more week of school left for the year. It feels like it should be the last Thursday of school though.

Already this week I've...

...had 4 headaches.
...been stressed 1400 times. (no lie)
...drank at least 2 liters of coffee.
...submitted official grades once.
...read 2 pages in my "fun" book.
...seen my classes 3 times each.
...talked to my plants 5 times.
...been on 1 date with my husband.

Overall, it's been a good week and it's not over yet! I still have graduation to attend tomorrow as well as multiple grad parties this weekend.

That's my week by the numbers. Please join me in this week's link up of "By the Numbers"!

I Was Asked to Speak at a Prom Banquet...and I Addressed Plagiarism. Yup.

Alright, before I go too far with my post, I want to first point out that some excerpts have been used from Chase Mielke's post entitled, "What Students Really Need to Hear". Go check it out here. I will reiterate the places I have used from Mielke's post to supplement the speech I had already prepared. I in no way intend to infringe upon any copyrights, so Mielke's copyright statement is posted here too:

"(C) Chase Mielke and AffectiveLiving, 2014. Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blog's author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full and clear credit is given to Chase Mielke and AffectiveLiving with appropriate and specific direction to the original content."

I have posted links to Mielke's blog AffectiveLiving so that all credit for his work is given to the owner.

Alright, let's get started. I was asked by some of the junior girls if I would speak at their Prom Banquet. Until I started teaching here, I had never heard of a Prom Banquet...we never had those! But I do love the idea. The entire junior and senior classes are invited to a nice meal--one of their last together as high school students. At the banquet, the junior and senior class presidents give a little speech and they always ask a faculty member to speak too.

When they asked me, I was honored to speak to them. And then I got nervous. "What in the world am I going to talk about?" I worried. Then I thought of all of the things I really wanted to say to my students. Why I worried about them. Why I think they can be better human beings. Why I think we all can be better human beings and what that would look like. But what happened is, I started writing down my thoughts and then I saw Mielke's post and his copyright notice. "Aha! I'll use excerpts to reiterate my points and then give Mielke due credit as per his copyright."  So here we go!

My speech went something like this:

What if I told you I really wanted to copy a “Letter to Students” and pass it off as my own? You can seriously answer that. What do we call that in class? Right, it’s plagiarism.

There are a few things you would probably think about me. First, you might think “Mrs. Entzel procrastinated and didn’t have time to write a speech for our banquet.” Not true.  And then that could lead into, “Mrs. Entzel was lazy and didn’t write a speech, so she just took someone else’s.” Again, not true. But then you might think, “She really doesn’t like us, so she just found something that’s already done so she wouldn’t have to put much effort into it.” For the third time, not true. At all.

In reality, when I read Chase Mielke’s post entitled “What Students Really Need to Hear” on his blog AffectiveLiving, I thought-- “That’s perfect! I feel the same way about my students!”

You might not believe me, but it’s the truth. Just listen to a few paragraphs he wrote and I’ll try to convince you.

This is what students really need to hear:

First, you need to know right now that I care about you. In fact, I care about you more than you may care about yourself.  And I care not just about your grades or your test scores, but about you as a person. And, because I care, I need to be honest with you. Do I have permission to be honest with you — both in what I say and how I say it?

Here’s the thing: I lose sleep because of you.  Every week.

Okay, now before you all start laughing at me...give me a chance to explain. The words this guy has written are true! The thing about school is that the most important thing is NOT the academics. Okay, those of you who disagree with me, hear me out! The academic aspect of school IS important, but it’s not the MOST important part. You do need to know how to communicate to others. You do need to know how to add and subtract so you can balance your checkbook. You need to know how to present yourselves appropriately online. You do learn important things here at school.

But the most important thing to learn before you graduate is how to be a decent human being. When I read the words, “I lose sleep because of you,” I meant it. Seniors--if you make it to graduation and I have the nagging feeling in my mind that you won’t be successful, I will feel like a failure.

Juniors--if you don’t take advantage of next year and be the best human being ever, if you don’t learn how to take criticism, how to put up with something--or someone you reeealllyy don't like, if you don’t learn how to communicate your ideas--I will feel like a failure.

Okay Seniors--I can officially say this now. You are my first ever group of seniors that I’ve had the privilege--sometimes a frustrating privilege--of teaching for your last year of high school. Remember that day when I came in and we talked about the poem “Barbie Doll”? I remember walking into the English classroom, absolutely terrified. What if I failed? What if I taught you the lesson and in the middle of it--someone started throwing things at me? I had no idea what to expect. Do you know what I remember? I remember students who were helping me to succeed. Seniors--you’re almost done with your High School career! Congratulations!

Juniors--it’s your turn. Remember when we went to “The Great Gatsby” last year? I do. We were all so excited--I couldn’t wait to take a group of mature sophomores to a movie. I thought it was going to be a blast. I guess I was wrong, huh?  Do you remember when I said that I’d never take you to another movie during your high school career? Don’t worry, I’m sticking to that promise. Even though we won’t go to another movie, I am happy to see how everyone has changed this year. Everyone has had the opportunity to mature and grow up this year. Some of us have taken advantage of that, some of us haven’t. You know which group you fall into.

But what I’ve come to realize is that as tough as life can be, I don’t ever want any of you to feel that quitting is an option. Sometimes we don’t realize that quitting looks different to everyone. In Chase Mielke’s post, he outlines different scenarios for quitting. He says the real reasons for losing sleep are these:

You are failing the main event of school. You are quitting. You may not think you are quitting, but you are because quitting wears many masks.

For some, you quit by throwing the day away and not even trying to write a sentence or a fraction because you think it doesn’t matter or you can’t or there’s no point…

Some of you quit by skipping class on your free education….understanding that sometimes short term pain creates long-term gain and that great people make sacrifices for a greater good.

For others, you quit by being rude and disrespectful to adults in the hallway who ask you to come to class...the main event is learning how to problem solve maturely.

...some of you quit by not choosing to take opportunities to work harder and pass a class, no matter how far down you are...the main event is pulling your crap together and making hard choices and sacrifices when things seem impossible.

...every time you take the easy way out, you are building a habit of quitting. And it will destroy your future and it will annihilate your happiness if you let it.

Chase Mielke has found many challenges for students and teachers alike. As much as I wanted to not include any information in this speech that was not my own, I found his words inspiring. I found his words challenging. And if I could find these words inspiring, I wanted to share them with you. I know that we all have urges to quit. We want to give up on a task, we reeeeaaallllyyy don’t want to go to work, we don’t want to put forth extra effort just because. But what would happen if we ALL chose to not quit? What if we all chose to write one extra sentence to explain ourselves? What if we all chose to be extra respectful to others we see every day? What if we all chose to be present, both physically and mentally, every day? I can only dream about what our school would look like and how others would view Fisher Public Schools.

Mielke's message isn’t just for students--it’s for humans. My challenge for you is to not quit. Take advantage of the opportunities available to you. Try to be the best human being you can be. In the end, it really doesn’t matter which formulas you remembered for your chapter 12 test, or if you know what a dangling modifier is. If, at the end of your high school career, you can go off into college or the work force as a successful human being, we (your teachers) will have succeeded as well.

I left my students with one final thought. I directed one student at each table to hold up a copy of a book and show it to everyone else.

And then we read "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" I hope they realize how much I do care about them and I do hope they succeed.

Students, if you're reading this--remember that your teachers are always here for you!

Summer by the Numbers {Link Up!}

Well, Aubrey and I decided to do another round of "By the Numbers"! This time, it's a summer edition. Before we get started today, I'd like to formally invite you to participate! If you're new here, welcome.

If you have a blog and would like to participate, this week we are looking at our summer plans. Aubrey did a list of 10 summer goals. I am doing 12 (12-ish weeks in the summer, so...). The only "rules"...link up here by grabbing the button and directing readers back here to find the other participants!

Now, you might be thinking, "But, I don't have a blog...so I can't participate." That's not true! If you want to post on Facebook, Twitter (might be kinda hard with character limits, but good for you!), Instagram, Google+, etc. please DO! Whatever your drug Social Media of choice, please do participate! The more the merrier.

We will be trying to do these link ups once per week...or twice per month.

Without further ado, my 2014 Summer Plans "By the Numbers"!
[in no particular order]

1. Read 12 three books this summer. I'd LOVE to be able to read a book a week this summer. But I don't think that's very feasible. So, one per month will have to suffice. These three books do NOT include any "self-help" books. I intend to read The Total Money Makeover and change my money mindset. But these three books WILL be fun books.

2. Make a quilt! My brother graduated three years ago and I had a quilt done for him when he graduated. My sister graduates in two weeks and I don't even have enough fabric to make her a quilt! So...I need to step it up. Plus, then I can finally use my new sewing machine!

3. Teach 2nd-6th graders the basics of knitting and crocheting. I can't wait!

4. Go camping SO MANY TIMES with my husband, friends, family, etc. I can't wait to just get away for a weekend or week. Some relaxation time is much needed.

5. Get our apartment completely unpacked. We've been in our new apartment for 2 months now and we still have stuff in boxes. Hmmph.

6. In the same vein...I'd like to get our apartment decorated. Pictures need to get up on the wall, shelves, a guest room... The tasks are limitless.

7. Be 100% prepared for the start of school come the end of August. I know this is ambitious, but I'm going to try my darndest to figure it out. Even if it means extra hours and lots of reading (in addition to my aforementioned 3 books).

8. Spend some time with our niece and nephew. They'll be in the state around our (mine & hubs') first anniversary...they'll be a joy to spoil! *Sorry mom and dad!*

9. Take a "just because" trip with my husband. Last summer we were spoiled because we had our wedding and then took off for our honeymoon right after. This summer we'll have to be a little more proactive about saving our money to go on a trip.

10. Go to some baseball games. Redhawks anyone? Or the Twins (Joe Mauer)?

11. Get a sun tan and enjoy my time with friends! Last summer hubs and I lived an hour away from most of our close friends. This summer, they're literally 100 yards away from our back window! I have a new pair of rollerblades and I'm ready to hit the town! *not really, I just want to get in shape and spend time with friends in the process...hah*

12. Cook and bake A LOT. We planted some seeds last week. And they're growing like crazy! Check em out! I can't wait to use our fresh herbs, tomatoes, peppers, peas, cucs, etc in all of our cooking and baking. PLUS we have a nice mixer to use in making our own bagels. OH MY! I can't wait!

Alright, now that I've sufficiently bored you to death, thanks for sticking around! Again, I'd love to have you participate in our Link-Up! Just grab the button and add it to your summer list "By the Numbers"!

Oh, and if you're looking for something a little less...boring wordy, my speech for this year's Junior/Senior Prom banquet will be up before tomorrow is out!

How is it MAY already?

It feels like just yesterday that...

*Do not use photos without permission**photography by Erin Johnson Photography*

...we got married.

...the school year started.

...we went to Denver to see our favorite niece and nephew.

...Thanksgiving pies, family, & Black Friday shopping.

...our first married Christmas!

...our 3 Valentine's Day together.

...March 9. A year after we got engaged.

...Easter with family.

...FHS 2014 prom. It was a loooong process.

A year isn't really that long. But it's crazy to think of all of the things that have happened in the last year. I've also finished my first full year of teaching. It's been a good year. It's also been a full year. With only a few weeks left of school, I'm looking forward to relaxing!
